Full name:
Maraas
Age:
29
Gender:
Male, aqun-athlok
Race: Qunari
Nationality: Par Vollen/Tal-Vashoth
Class/Occupation:
Rogue archer, spy, and thief. Hired sword.
Background:
As with all Qunari, Maraas was raised by Tamassarans and then sorted into a job. From a young age, he showed signs of being a decent archer and soldier, but with a curious interest in those who do not follow the Qun. As such, he was placed as a foreign trader, primarily to study foreign weaponry. A few years later, he reported for re-education, and he began a new life as aqun-athlok.
With his reassignment, Maraas became appointed a ranged infantry scout (ashaad) of the Beresaad. He was sent with a small group of others to travel across Thedas and make reports to keep Qunari society up-to-date with Thedan events. Almost a year later, the Fifth Blight broke out.
The group camped a few miles off of a road one night, and they were ambushed in their sleep. A mercenary gang had been hired to kill them or drive the Qunari off the land, which was owned by a local nobleman. Before anyone could fight back, most of his squadron were imprisoned. The mercenaries burned and broke their weapons, knowing full well a Qunari military man's weapon was his soul. His troop all began to struggle and fight, and most of them were killed in the process. Without their swords, their lives were over. Maraas didn't fight his bond, and so he was spared. The mercenaries talked about selling him to slavery or attempting to hold a ransom. Maraas didn't want to stay long enough to find out.
In the dead of night, Marass broke free from his bonds, and he fled the camp. He knew he couldn't return to the Qunari without his sword and bow. The Qun would demand his life, but Maraas was not prepared to give it. He officially deserted and became a Tal-Vashoth. Ten years later, Par Vollen has officially recognized his status as Tal-Vashoth, and Maraas wanders around Thedas as a "hired sword." He never stays in one place for more than a year, and he sells his talents to make money, and sometimes he sells information. His assumed name means "nothing" or "alone," representing both his skills as a rogue and his status as a deserter.
Personality:
Despite being a plethora of other things, Maraad is usually very quiet. Although he has lived in various parts of Thedas outside of Par Vollen, his common is still a little broken. His knowledge of other languages, such as Elvhen, Tevinter, Antivan, etc. is limited to curse words and expressions of gratitude. Sometimes his inability to communicate effectively makes him embarrassed, and he stubbornly chooses to not say much at all.
However, once he has warmed up to a person, and even sort of trusts them, Maraas is more likely to speak. Underneath his quiet nature, he is proud, stubborn, and very curious. Maraas makes up for his quietness with an enjoyment for listening, as he is always curious to learn more about the world around him. At first, he was insecure and afraid of his decision to abandon the Qun, but after several years, Maraas learned that leaving the Qun gave him the chance to study the other cultures of Thedas along the way.
Once he is incredibly comfortable and friendly around a character, his true nature begins to shine through. Maraas is often very kind and sincere. He gets easily embarrassed due to his proud nature, but when in an environment where he can relax, he often wears his heart on his sleeve.
TV Tropes:
Appearance:
Due to his aqun-athlok nature, Maraas is slightly smaller than the average male Qunari. He is not small by any means, however, as he stands at 6'4" tall, and he is built with lean muscle. The strongest-looking parts of him are his upper arms and thighs. He has small breasts, since he never desired surgery to remove them. He does, however, take a simple draught he makes himself, and it makes his body shape appear more masculine. He usually wears a unique version of the antaam-saar, donning the feminine version of the top and the masculine version of the bottoms. His clothes are often in dark purple, dark red, or dark gray colors. His skin is a light gray, his eyes are dark red, and his hair is white, cut into an angled bob.
Writing sample:
In ten years, one simple, undeniable fact became absolutely clear to Maraas: being a Qunari made it nearly impossible to blend in.
Despite this fact, however, Maraas made a living as a hired sword, thief, and spy. Despite his tall stature, his gray skin, white hair, and large horns, Maraas could still go unnoticed in the shadows of Thedas. This particular mission was simple: break into an arl's study, retrieve a ring, deliver it to the client. It was easy as pie to track the arl's movements, strike when he left for Denerim, and make off with the ring before anyone was the wiser. His efforts granted him 50 silver, which he promptly traded for repairs, board, and food.
Carrying his loot back to the inn, Maraas noticed a child curled up against a wall. Based on the straw and blanket, Maraas assumed that particular spot was her home. The child was likely an orphan of the Fifth Blight, barely looking a day over 10 years old, and she was obviously starving.
"You there, girl," Maraas blurted. The girl jumped out of her skin, obviously frightened at the sudden appearance of the large Qunari. Maraas knelt down so that they were eye level, and he shifted through his bag.
"I mean you no harm," he stated. "You look hungry. Please, take this." Maraas pulled a loaf of bred out of his bag, as well as a wedge of cheese. "Hide it." Maraas also pulled out four silver, and he discreetly pressed it into her hand. "Buy a bag, to carry the food. Use the rest, go to Denerim. The chantry will take you."
The girl looked up at Maraas, eyes wide with surprise as she squeezed the coins close to her and wrapped the food in her blanket. "Thank you, serah. You're a Qunari, right?" Maraas nodded, unwilling to explain. "You're so kind, though. Thank you. Thank you, serah." The girl stood up and bundled the blanket in her arms, and Maraas stood up as well. The girl was eye-level with his waist. She smiled at him, and then she scurried off in the direction of the marketplace.
Maraas watched her until he could not see her anymore, and then he walked towards the town gate. He could feel the eyes of everyone around him, and he could almost hear their whispers. A Qunari, savage and brutal cold-hearted murderer, gave food and coin to a homeless orphan. Maraas thought of the ring in his bag, and he grinned. Yes, being a Qunari made it nearly impossible to fit in.
