Maraas shook his head, lowering his empty mug to the floor. His expression returned to impassive pretty quickly and he stretched his long legs towards the fire. "Not awkward," he stated simply. "Just... new? Being Tal-Vashoth is... lonely. It is nice just to chat."
Maraas looked out of the corner of his eye at Emil, noticing the small cues of nervousness and self-depreciation. "The hair statement was an attempt at a joke. I think the horns and my tall are more obvious." He looked back to the fire. The alcohol, however light, definitely encouraged more speaking from him. He figured it didn't matter, the elf would likely be gone in the morning. Friendships, though rare, never lasted for longer than a night in front of a fireplace.

Emil lips lifted in a somewhat strained smile at the reassurance. So the qunari was a recent tal-vashoth. He had heard that such things were very difficult, it was like leaving home forever. He nodded in understanding and took a sip from his flagon.
"Hahaha, well it was a very funny joke." He encouraged. There weren't a lot of things that could arise more than a chuckle from him so that in itself was saying something. But his companion had no way of knowing that, so he felt it best to be forthcoming. "Keep up that level of comedy and you'll have plenty of friends."

Maraas nodded. If simple statements like that made friends in harsh, muddy lands, then he would certainly make sure to remember them. Maraas stared at the fire in silence, unsure of what to say next. The tavern slowly cleared out over time, but even as the crowd cleared out, everyone else kept away from the fireplace.
Once it was clear enough, Maraas picked up his empty mug and stood up. "Please excuse me for a moment," he said quietly. He got up and went to the bar, handing his empty mug over and inquiring about board. Sure enough, they were booked full as well. The bartender said he could sleep at a table, but Maraas decided he would rather take his chances camping in a muddy field. He wandered back to the bench by the fireplace and sat down.

Emil watched the qunari walk over to the bar and walk back looking a little disappointed. He smiled as he sat down.
"Out of space, I take it?" He asked, it was probably a lie knowing shems. There have been plenty times where he had been to taverns that were 'out of space' because he was an elf. Sometimes no amount of coxing would allow for free space.

Maraas sighed, nodding. "The inn was full too," he stated. The fact that Emil understood immediately confirmed his suspicions about it being a racial issue. Once again, Maraas felt himself reminded about just how harsh Fereldan could be. "I'll likely try the stable." Maybe he'd get some sleep before they chased him out with pitchforks. Humans were always braver during the daytime, he noticed. Likely due to their latent fear of the dark, stemming from their inability to see in the dark. During the night, they would give the qunari a wide berth. In the daylight, they would group together and stand up to him.

"Ugh, no you can't sleep in a stable, that's where horses live and defecate." Emil scrunched up his nose. He held up one finger before getting off the bench and striding over to the bartender. Where he proceeded to yell. For being so small and scrawny, he found he was quite intimidating when it counted. The bartender shrank against the verbal abuse the elf hurtled his way. With empty threats such as 'I'm from Rivain, do you know what happens to people who mess with elves from Rivain? BAD THINGS.' and 'My companion is qunari, now just because they'll believe anything doesn't mean he's not going to be furious when he finds out he's been duped! Do you want that in your tavern because I don't want to have shemlen blood on my new boots.'
The berating continued for a solid minute before Emil collected himself and returned to the fireplace. He sat down primly and huffed. "He just remembered that they do have a room available."

Maraas watched Emil March over there, and he could almost see the hell he was about to unleash. Maraas watched in surprise as the elf berated and intimidated the bartender, who looked equally as surprised. To be honest, Emil spoke so quickly that Maraas could hardly even process what was being said.
When Emil sat down, Maraas felt reminded of a cat that just caught its prey--proud and humble at the same time. "Thank you," he murmured. "You did not have to do that."

"It's not an issue, we 'undesirables' have to stick together." Emil smiled weakly and examined his rings. "Though it does seem that they actually only have a single room available, I hope you don't mind if I also stay in said room."
The room, he had been informed, had two small cot-like beds so it wouldn't really be that much of a problem for the pair of them to stay in the room. He just didn't want the qunari to feel pushed or uncomfortable.

Maraas blinked in surprise, but he nodded. "I do not mind." He cracked a small smile, indicating he was going to attempt at a joke. "No matter what, it is better than the mud." His face soon melted back into neutrality.
Such rooms were common in taverns, Maraas found. The rooms were mostly designed to just have a palace to lay for the night, often for those who were too drunk to go home, or for travelers. Inns were more expensive, but they offered privacy and a somewhat higher level of comfort.

Emil smiled back in response to the one he received, though the smile was gone nearly as fast as it came. "Yes well, don't tell the Fereldans that, they love mud it seems. Wouldn't want to spoil it for them."
He stretched his arms and took off his coat to let it dry beside the fire. Though, it was somewhat cooler without it he was next to a fire. He rifled through his jacket pockets to make sure there wasn't anything flammable in them. Satisfied with the knowledge he would set the tavern on fire by accident. He huffed out a small breath, somewhat tired from the long day of traveling he had.

Maraas left his coat and cloak on, although he did move closer to the fire. The warmth on his face almost felt like the sun if he closed his eyes and ignored the chill in his toes. He nodded at the mud stereotype, however. Fereldans got a lot of crap for it, even though it was true. They couldn't really help but get used to it with all the rain and cold, though.
"Why are you here?" Maraas asked, trying to keep up polite conversation. His eyelids felt heavy and he glanced out the window to see if he could guess the time. "To this town. If it is alright to ask."

"Just traveling. I'm very nomadic." He took a sip of his ale which was starting to become room temperature, rendering it even more disgusting. "What about yourself?"

Maraas stared into the fire. "I had a job further south. I am on my way back. For the rest of my payment." He looked over at Emil. "Nomadic... That means... you move a lot?" He briefly scrunched his face, trying to remember the word. "I also move a lot."

"Yes, that is what it means. I mostly travel in Fereldan, Antiva, and Rivain. Sometimes to Orlais, never to Teventer. I went there once... once was enough times." Emil thought about the slavers who had tried to capture him and shivered. "What about you? Do you travel all over or selectively?"

Maraas watched Emil intently as he spoke, curious about the other's travels. "I go where there is work," he replied simply, straightening his back. "I have not gone to Tevinter." Somehow, he didn't think that Tevinter would welcome him with open arms, Tal-Vashoth or not. The relationships between qunari and Tevinter were... complicated. Not to mention all the slavers and the rampant use of blood magic. While Maraas didn't hate mages, he was still wary around them until he could gauge their intentions. "It is easier to... blend in, in Rivain. There is a lot of work in Antiva." Maraas looked into the fire, thinking about each place. "I try to avoid Orlais, but it is too large."
