Full name: Calanthe (kə-LAN-thee) Merulus Mulvehill, Cal, “Singe”
Age: 28
Gender: Female
Race: Human
Nationality: Born in Tevinter, but raised in the Free Marches
Class/Occupation: Mage / Mage Underground Agent
Background:
Cal was born to a Tevinter woman of the family "Merulus”, which is classified under the Laetan social class. Cal’s mother was unable to raise her, not only because Calanthe was the child of a secret affair, but also due to the fact that newfound information regarding the family’s potential Altus status arose. In order to protect her child from the inevitable political battle, Cal's mother arranged for her daughter to be sent out of the country with her lover, a wandering Free Marcher. Months after her birth, Calanthe was successfully transported from the country. Cal's mother attempted to write to her family afterward, but only two letters were received in the following year. There was no indication of her status or station when she wrote her last letter, and she was not heard from again.
Cal’s father aided mages in the Free Marches. This meant that the two were always on the move to evade capture and detection, if not only for their "crimes" against the law. Cal began to display her abilities as a magic-wielder when she was just past three years old, which made it all the more important to stay out of the Chantry's line-of-sight.
Even though Cal was very young, she was surprisingly well-adjusted to life in the Mage Underground. She attended to little tasks for the mages in need, and sometimes, those mages would show her how to perform basic magic tricks in amusement. It was her father’s best friend in the Underground (an elf from a Fereldan Circle), though, who acted as a mentor for Calanthe. As she got older, Cal’s passion for helping mages had not diminished, and she was soon organizing escapes and safe houses on her own, operating under the codename “Singe”.
As tensions intensified between the mages and Templars, Cal moved into Kirkwall and operated the Mage Underground there for a period. Unfortunately, after a little incident (concerning Templars) that was remedied with a lot of luck (which may or may not have involved an invasion of some sort), Cal was forced to flee from Kirkwall.
Over the next few years, Cal has continued her work as usual until the Nevarran Accord was dissolved. What was there to do next? The mages would need help adjusting to life out of the Circles, and it is certain that there would be resistance from people who disagreed with the dissolve. And maybe, if all was eventually settled, she could begin a life of her own. However, her thoughts always trailed back to the letters in her bag and the pendant around her neck. Should she dare travel to Tevinter now? If she did, would it be worth it?
Personality:
As a Mage Underground agent, Calanthe frequently utilizes her intelligence and adaptive skills on a regular basis. Survival in the wild and healing are just a couple of talents that Cal has learned during her life on the run. As a mage, she also excels in elemental magic (fire and ice specifically).
Calanthe has a pre-disposed knack for kindness. She supported her father through the difficult times and worked diligently at every task given to her. Growing older, Cal’s sweet and sincere demeanor quickly hardened into something more passionate and bold.
Witnessing injustices done to others is one of her least favorite pastimes. Correcting the oppressor, however, is something she thoroughly enjoys. This is not because she likes to “play-the-hero”, but rather because she is simply very moral. However, she does indulge in the act of overtaking anyone from the Templar Order. Her distaste for the Order and the Chantry is quite strong, no doubt influenced by her life as a rebel mage. Cal never lived in a Circle, nor has she read the entirety of the Chant, but the stories passed to her from fleeing mages solidified her hate for the institution and its people.
After living life on the run for so long, Cal does not have any close relationships. Most of her interactions were with other Underground agents, but she was not able to get close to anyone, as the job demanded secrecy when it came to their personal lives, as well as constant movement. She is not socially inept, however, and can to make light conversation with others.
Without a stable support-system, Calanthe consequently bottles-up her emotions, making her irritable and stressed, and at its worst, destructive. Also, her drive for working in the Mage Underground is in NO POSSiBLE WAY related to her desire to reunite families, and it ESPECIALLY DOES NOT reflect her personal family history (or, perhaps more accurately, the lack thereof).
Calanthe believes spirits, like any other being--human, elf, dwarf, and even Qunari--, should be recognized as such and be respected at the least. She doesn't know much about the Qunari besides what she has been told by her father, heard from town rumours, or from what she has seen in Kirkwall, but she does not hold the group to the typical stereotypes. This attitude is applicable to toward most other races and religions, the outliers being things such as the darkspawn, and due to her heavy bias, those who serve under the Andrastian Chantry. The only difference between the latter and the former is that Cal will not immediately burn a Templar knight on sight (but the thought of doing so may linger).
Her heritage is something she likes to entertain in thought. The exact reasons of her removal from Tevinter are not completely known to her, and her knowledge of the country is minimal; she knows as much about it as any other outsider does. As mentioned before, Calanthe knows of the rumours that surround Tevinter society, and because she does not want to be assumed as a blood mage upon introduction, she initially identifies as a Free Marcher (not that it’s much of a lie anyway).

Calanthe could practically hear the roar of cheers as the announcement began to reach all the Circles of Thedas. At first she was suspicious, hearing the rumors in passing. But then, people began to get angry. How could that have been a ploy? When the mages were beginning to be released from the holds of the towers, how could it have been fake? She laughed to herself.
She and her accomplices of the Mage Underground were all celebrating somewhere, and Cal was happy for them, even though she had never known their names. They had not known hers’ either, of course, and that was fine. What mattered was that they all made it to this moment. Calanthe's fingers twirled her dark hair as she lost herself in thought and relief. This had been her entire life, and now, everything was going to be different.
Something rang in the air nearby, causing the atmosphere to rumble slightly. It must be magic, she thought. Someone’s celebrating… Or not. If it were darker, she imagined that she might have seen a flicker of light from outside the barn.
No more of this.
She scanned the drab area of the barnhouse, taking in the straw and dirt she had been sleeping on over the past few days. I knew I had to move, she thought, but I didn’t expect that to mean… What? That she could stay in a tavern without fretting over who would see her? That she could own a house; that she could settle down? That she could-
Her brow furrowed and she shook her head. A simple dissolve would not be enough. People would be furious! And the Templars--the Chantry. Would they still hunt mages after this? Cal’s staff shifted as she placed more weight upon it.
This is foolish, she chastised herself. Enjoy it while you can.
Huffing, the mage rearranged herself between the haystacks, groaning in annoyance as straw poked through her cloak and into her back.
"If only you could have seen this, Da’," she sighed, her hand drawing out a leather cord from under her tunic. The silver pendant strung on it glimmered in the dying light of day, reflecting the orange haze of the barn.
You too, she thought, hiding it once again from view.
“Maybe you too.”
