Kian followed the two default leaders of their eclectic group, listening to the conversation and petting his small fluffy companion with the hand not holding his staff. "I'll be b-better in a group. If I go alone, I m-might get injured. Badly. Also t-they might have magical defenses. Or something." He stammered out, cheeks flushing at his mangled words. "I-I do have shields and stuff I can conjure. And just yell for m-me if you get hurt." His cat, a small black thing named Merin, poked her head out of his satchel, ears twitching. She let out a chirping meow and Kian chuckled softly, scratching behind her ears.

Benjin nods his approval at Riona's plan and looks to Tacivi with a grin. Kian couldn't be more opposite.
"So we got one mage who wants to take 3 on himself, and the other better on the back lines. Think that will work well enough anyways," He admits with a shrug, before falling in beside Kian, and peeking over at the little bundle in his back pack.
"Cute little furball," He comments looking down on the little black kitten. So much for all the stories about witches and their black cats - looked as though wizards kept them too. His thoughts are disrupted when through the woods come the echoing, mournful howl of wolves. They sounded a ways off, but noise carried strangely through the trees sometimes, regardless he shrugs it off, as he offers a comforting word between the crew, "Don't worry much about them. When we make camp tonight we can light some fires - what we should be scouring the road for is any sign of people, cutting away from the road. Just give a yell if you see anything."

Honestly, she's a little impressed with the quiet guy, if he's willing to split them in three points and come from his own angle. Assuming he's not trying to screw them over and run, then he's got some high impressions of his own abilities and intends to back them up. It's a good attitude. She gives him a thumbs up at his offer.
Then -- ah. Wolves. A natural, if unfortunate, reality of open forests like these. The biggest animals in any given alienage are a few scrawny stray dogs, thin and small from starvation, so animals larger than that always get her itching for her blade.
"Well, they're a good sign, too," Riona points out, though she can't hide the nervous dart of her eyes around them. "They're not scared out of the woods by whatever's going on, so they still think there's good hunting worth the trouble."

"So we're not likely to run into a blood mage cult dancing nude in the moonlight?" the quip came quickly, but internally there was a note of seriousness to the question.
The idea of fighting any mage was...disquieting. Hitting a moving target required concentration enough when it wasn't flinging fire at you...or lightning. Out of its eyes. You couldn't fault a man for being afraid. Their new mage companions seemed nice enough, though. Not the sort he met in the kind of establishments he frequented, but that was probably a good thing. They may as well have been a different breed from the pretentious court mages of Val Royeaux.
The lack of noise did set him on edge, however. Not from the group- but birdsong. Ferelden and its damn crows, often they kept him awake through the night till the larks came. But right now? Nothing.

Kian gave Benjin a small smile. He wasn't as afraid of him and his companions now. And anybody who called Merin cute was a good guy in his book. "Her n-name's Merin. She's been with m-me for a while now." The cat in question darted back into his bag at the sound of wolf calls. Kian perked up, listening. "About seven or eight. A full p-pack." He said absently. Wandering the forests of Thedas alone gave him a pretty accurate ear for these things. He frowned. "The birds are silent though." Were they gone because of the wolves? No... There wasn't even the sound of wings beating the air. He muttered a few words in Tevene, activating his protective aura. Just in case. The aura spread out like a sea of calm, and everything in the forest came into sharp focus. Kian nodded, satisfied, and held his staff close.

"Thats a fair call Ri, but how to hunt them? Chase around a deer with that sword of yours?" Benjin can't help but tease, but at the mention of blood mages has to give it some consideration. There was always the possibility.
"If we come across a naked cult, I suppose we give them a minute or two to dress before.. you know, getting to the fighting," He decides upon resolutely with a shrug, then turns to Kian. A sharp notice, that - as a city guard listening to the woodland had never been high on his list of priorities and while he had the basics of camping and bandit hunting down, tromping through forests on rough hewn dirt roads was not his area of expertise. Perhaps, for a moment he felt just the slightest bit homesick for Kirkwall - but its a thought that quickly passes. Piss on that accursed city and all it stood for.
"Mayhaps little Merin gave them a scare?" He suggests with a shrug, as the echoes of the wolves song winds its way through the trees, just the slightest bit longer than he'd like. Light faded faster in the forest, too - already darkening beneath the canopy they would soon truly be in proper darkness.

"I don't t-think blood mages actually d-dance naked." Kian said, confusion clear in his voice. "Or. Did you m-mean not literally? Was it an exaggeration?" Kian ducked his head, brown cheeks flushing dark in embarrassment. He really isn't any good with people or conversation.
He glanced at the rest of the party, the Orlesian and the silent mage, before looking back at Benjin. "Merin's s-scared herself. Do you think something's scaring the a-animals? But the wolves still s-sing." He frowned, wrapping his aura closer around the little party. He couldn't fight, but by the Void, he'd defend the best he could. In his own magical way. He wondered if anyone else had felt the change the aura he had brought about. If anyone, it'd be the other mage in the party.

Dev gave a fond chuckle, "No. Might make things more interesting, though," he tried not to scrunch his nose at the stench of sap, "Maker knows Ferelden needs it."
Of course, he'd gotten the distinct impression things were about to change. The continuous howling was disconcerting at best, and with light fading, it was best they come to a stop soon.
"Usually they stick together," he spouted the comment, directed at no one in particular, "the crows and the wolves. The howling attracts them." His hand twitched toward the quiver strap across his shoulder, before relaxing. "But there's nothing. Means the crows are alert." They used to hunt game that way, him and his brother. Before he was sent to squire. Easy pickings often meant a larger predator elsewhere.

There's an inelegant snort of amusement from Riona as the conversation turns from strategy to silliness -- usually people believed it was elves who danced naked through the trees, not blood mages. What an atypical group this was. (But honestly, blood mages? What good is there working each other up into a panic when there's nothing new learned?)
Riona pulls most of her attention from her companions to the to the surroundings, keeping an eye out for any decent camping spot as they make their way through the trees. "I've seen that in alienages, crows following stray dogs around for what they leave behind. If the birds aren't calling, does that mean they've found something?"

Kian turned towards Dev at his chuckle, smiling slightly. "Fereldan's b-better than some other places. The Anderfels r-really are very desolate. And the Wilds are really soggy. But d-dancing blood mages would be a change wouldn't it?" Kian glanced into the trees, wind ruffling the bushes and branches. He felt uneasy, but then again, he almost always felt uneasy. For once he was especially glad to not be alone.
"Found something? L-like, a body? Or d-dead animal?" He felt a pang of sadness at the thought of an animal slain, but he shook it aside. He had to learn that was how nature worked. "There wasn't any earlier today I think. Not t-that I noticed anyways." He stepped closer to the group, trying to muster what little bravery and bravado he possessed.
